The All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate for Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency, Barr. Joseph Ekumankama, has felicitated with the people of Nguzu Edda on the annual IGBA NZU New Yam Festival, describing the celebration as a powerful symbol of cultural identity, unity, gratitude and communal solidarity.
Ekumankama, a former Minister, in a goodwill message to the community which was made available to Journalists described the New Yam Festival as one of the outstanding cultural activities in Igbo land, noting that it has continued to preserve the traditional values, identity and communal spirit of the people across generations.
He said the grand finale of the Nguzu Edda New Yam Festival, known as Igba Nzu, marks the beginning of the traditional New Year, the end of the planting season and the ushering in of the new yam.
According to him, the festival has remained the lifewire preserving the traditional character of the Nguzu Edda people, both at home and in the Diaspora.
“Over the years, Igba Nzu has grown beyond a celebration of harvest to become a platform for fostering togetherness, love, unity and community development.
“For generations, Igba Nzu Nguzu Edda has remained more than just a celebration of harvest. It is a powerful expression of our culture, identity, unity, gratitude and togetherness,” he said.
Ekumankama noted that the festival also serves as a bridge between generations and provides an avenue for sons and daughters of Nguzu Edda at home and abroad to reconnect with their ancestral roots.
“My heart knows no bounds whenever I have the opportunity to partake in such a beautiful celebration of our heritage. Seeing our people come together in love, joy and unity reminds me of the richness of who we are and the traditions we must preserve,” he said.
The APC candidate urged the people of Nguzu Edda to use the occasion to strengthen peace and unity, in line with the peace-oriented agenda of the Ebonyi State Government under Governor Francis Nwifuru.
“As you celebrate this year’s New Yam Festival, let us reflect on the importance of this culture as a tool for unifying our land. I urge you to sustain and consolidate the peace that exists among you,” he said.
He called on the people, irrespective of political or other differences, to continue to pray for peace and harmony in Edda land, the Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency and Nigeria at large.
Ekumankama also expressed optimism that the prevailing peace and stability in the area would be sustained as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
He stressed the need for the people to protect, preserve and promote their cultural heritage, saying that traditional festivals such as Igba Nzu provide younger generations with an opportunity to appreciate their roots and strengthen communal bonds.
“Our culture is our identity. Our unity is our strength. Our heritage is our pride,” he declared.
Ekumankama congratulated the Ezeogo of Ebiri and Nguzu, and all sons and daughters of Nguzu Edda at home and in the Diaspora on the successful celebration.
He wished the people peace, unity, prosperity and bountiful harvests, while urging continued support for initiatives that promote peace, development and unity across Edda land and the Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency.
