Abakaliki FC has announced the indefinite suspension of its chief coach, Ifeanyi Onyedika, citing unimpressive performances.
The decision was made public on Saturday after the team's 1-1 draw with Calabar Rovers in their Nigeria National League (NNL) opener at the Pa Ngele Oruta Stadium, Abakaliki.
Club chairman, Obinna Ogba, stated that the management had lost patience with Onyedika, an AFCON 80 winner.
"We started preparing for the season over three months ago, but results have been utterly unimpressive. We've given him time to improve, but we can't continue waiting," Ogba said.
Starplus Anista, the assistant coach, has taken over as acting head coach. "This is the first match of the season, but we hope to improve. We'll motivate the players to get better results," Anista said, regretting Onyedika's suspension.
Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, welcomed the decision, saying Onyedika's performance was subpar. "The coach just stood on the bench without motivating the players or making tactical input. We won't repeat last season's mistakes," Idike stated.
Calabar Rovers' coach, Christian Okonkwo, praised his team's performance, saying they followed instructions despite Abakaliki FC's aggressive tactics.
