The Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Transport has commended the General Manager of the Ebonyi State Transport Corporation (EBOTRANS), Mrs. Jennifer Nnenna Igwe, for implementing reforms that have significantly improved transportation services and brought relief to commuters across the state.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Deacon Joseph Ununu, gave the commendation during an oversight visit to the EBOTRANS headquarters, describing the corporation's transformation under Mrs. Igwe's leadership as a testament to effective governance driven by results rather than promises.
According to Hon. Ununu, the reforms introduced by the General Manager have not only improved transportation services but have also enhanced the daily lives of residents and stimulated economic activities across Ebonyi State.
He noted that the procurement of brand-new Sienna vehicles, rehabilitation of previously grounded buses, and expansion of transport routes to major destinations within and outside Ebonyi State represent landmark achievements in the history of the corporation.
The Committee Chairman also praised Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for prioritizing the transport sector through his administration's People's Charter of Needs agenda, stressing that the government's commitment is reflected in projects with direct benefits to the people.
Hon. Ununu called for stronger collaboration between the House Committee on Works and Transport and the management of EBOTRANS to consolidate the gains already recorded and drive further development in the state's transport sector.
Other members of the Committee also applauded the corporation's progress while offering recommendations for sustained growth.
The Deputy Chief Whip and member representing Izzi West State Constituency, Hon. Lucas Arinze Chukwu, Hon. Chief Godwin Abiri, representing Izzi East, and Hon. Obinna Mbam urged the management of EBOTRANS to provide the Committee with comprehensive reports on the corporation's operations.
Similarly, Hon. Barr. Aloysius Nwodo, representing Ebonyi North West, and Hon. Victor Nwoke, representing Abakaliki North, encouraged the General Manager to sustain the momentum of reforms and continue improving service delivery.
Responding, the General Manager, Mrs. Jennifer Nnenna Igwe, described the oversight visit as historic and appreciated the lawmakers for their encouragement and support.
She highlighted the corporation's major achievements to include the purchase of new Sienna vehicles, the opening of new routes to Iboko, Ikwo, Uburu, Enugu, Ovuduechi and Lagos, rehabilitation of non-functional vehicles, payment of gratuities to retired staff, settlement of rents for depots and transit camps outside the state, as well as prompt maintenance and servicing of operational vehicles.
Mrs. Igwe, however, identified several challenges confronting the corporation, including outstanding gratuity liabilities, unpaid rents for some depots and transit camps outside the state, and the absence of a modern vehicle maintenance workshop.
She appealed to the Ebonyi State Government and the House Committee on Works and Transport to support the corporation in addressing these challenges to further strengthen its capacity to provide affordable, efficient and reliable transport services.
In his vote of thanks, the Operational Manager of EBOTRANS, Mr. Innocent Obiahu Egwu, assured the lawmakers of the corporation's commitment to sustained partnership with the State House of Assembly in advancing safe, efficient and seamless transportation for the people of Ebonyi State.
