The Ebonyi State Government has announced a temporary halt on flight operations at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport.
The halt is to enable the completion of the installation and hooking up of airfield lighting to the powerhouse at the runway.
The Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, who announced this explained that the installation of airfield lighting is crucial for boosting flight operations at the airport. The lighting system will enable aircraft to land and take off during nighttime and cloudy weather.
Mrs. Obichukwu assured that the halt will be temporary, lasting only a few weeks emphasing that the government is committed to ensuring that the airport meets international best standards.
She said that government has recorded over 75 commercial and charter flight liftings within three months of commencing full operations.
The Commissioner who praised the governor, Francis Nwifuru, for his unwavering support and commitment to modernizing the airport said government has engaged professional security operatives to patrol the runway and prevent intruders and criminals from invading the airport.
The Commissioner also announced the establishment of a Jet A1 bowser with a 12,000-liter capacity for refueling aircraft at the airport. This facility will enable quick refueling of aircraft and enhance the efficiency of flight operations.
Ani Emmanuel, a director at Stern Energy, described the bowser as a heavy-duty facility with a 12,000-liter capacity.
Uchenna Christian, an expert in airfield light installation, explained that the installation of runway traffic lights and airfield lighting systems is a critical safety measure that requires careful planning and execution.
